A message from our 2022-2023 Chief Residents, Ashley Tran & Jason Haidar

Hey there fellow applicants!

Welcome to the Medstar Georgetown University Anesthesia Residency. We thank you for your interest and are super excited to share some of our favorite things about the program.

Because we are a categorical program, our CA-0’s (interns) are integrated into the medicine department but also have five months of anesthesia total during that year. These five months include one month of Acute Pain Service (APS), one month of Pre-Surgical Testing (PST), and three months of OR Anesthesia. During the three months of OR Anesthesia, interns are paired with a senior resident or are supervised one-on-one with an attending, learning the ropes of anesthesia and how to run their own cases.

As a senior resident, we are participating in complex cases including a variety of transplants (pediatric and adult livers, small bowel, kidneys), thoracic, and neurosurgery. During the CA-3 year, we also have the opportunity to live in NYC for one month to do a rotation at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) for a regional rotation (Apartment provided by HSS). This is on top of the regional rotations we already have at Georgetown and Washington Hospital Center as a CA-2.

Our location in Washington, DC has many perks. It provides city vibes but also allows you to have suburban feels with only a 15-20 minute drive away. Depending on what you are looking for in residency, you can choose to live within the District or in Virginia/Maryland suburbs. Both allow for manageable commute times. Additionally, DC has a variety of things to offer including a diverse food scene, outdoor activities, sports, and of course, the monuments and museums.

Lastly, the camaraderie between residents and attendings is unmatched. We take our wellness very seriously and love to hang out with each other outside of work! Feel free to follow us on our Instagram @georgetowngas to see what we’ve been up to.

We hope this has given some helpful insights into our program and we look forward to meeting you at our interviews!
